Rachel Knowles-Matthews
- Position :HCPC registered Music Therapist
Rachel qualified as a HCPC registered Music Therapist (MA Music Therapy) from the University of the West of England (UWE). Music therapy is a clinical, evidence-based psychotherapy approach that uses music interventions to support people with their emotional wellbeing. Working with clients of all ages and walks of life, Rachel offers a person-centered approach, adapting to the clients’ needs, whether this is trauma-informed, psychodynamic, or goal-orientated therapy. Rachel is an advocate for diversity and learning her clients’ background and musical culture. This offers clients an accessible way of working with music, giving independence to creative expression.
Rachel is also a trained Neurologic Music Therapist® by the Neurologic Music Therapy Academy™. Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT™) is a standardised evidence-based clinical treatment to help the brain heal, learn, and function better. It’s a structured approach with about 20 different techniques that are based on how the brain responds to rhythm, melody, and sound.
In music therapy, a person develops a relationship with a music therapist and music might become a tool to work towards clinical aims, set out and agreed with the music therapist. Some people wish to explore the non-verbal nature of music and arts therapies and clients aren’t required to possess any level of musicianship to engage meaningfully in music therapy.
